The presentations we did this month were all great. Its quite evident that lots of coordination, teamwork, and detail went into them. With that said, I think our group definitely used the most factual, and reliable information within the presentation. With the information coming from sources such as the Pew Research Center, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism,. National Health Interview Survey by the CDC, and so on... As opposed some of the other groups that used the likes of Vox.
Speaking of our presentation, we talked about the history and characteristics of coronavirus, and its effects on people, the economy, businesses, society, and so on... The presentation began with a not so quick introduction to the Pandemic. Describing SARS-CoV-2 and Covid-19, Grace wrote, SARS-CoV-2 is the "human coronavirus and a member of the coronaviridae family". Covid-19 is a virus, that was first reported to the World Health Organization on December 31st, 2019. It wasn't until March 11th, that the World Health Organization labeled the outbreak a global pandemic. We went on to talk about some of the characteristics and the infection process of coronavirus, such as how it is transmitted, how it enters our cells, the incubation time of the virus, when it is most contagious, and how the virus is detected. For example, grace wrote that "transmission of the coronavirus occurs from direct or indirect contact with an infected person or via droplet and aerosol routes." We went on to talk about the demographic features and symptoms in mild, moderate, severe, and critical cases. For example, some of the mild cases consist of mild fever, sore throat, diarrhea, and so on... In addition to that, we talked about clinical management, infection prevention and control measures. Following this, we touched upon the coronavirus fatality rates by age group, human behavior, reopening, issues our population is facing during the pandemic, such as health, education, and economy, and finally, mutations and tolerance to treatment.
The second section of the presentation gave a brief history overlook of the coronavirus, and went on to talk about a variety of topics and events, such as the origins of coronavirus, the 1918 spanish flu, coronavirus evolution, contradictions and indications for coronavirus, how the coronavirus vaccine works, and whether the vaccine is safe.
The third section of the presentation, talked about the personal and public recounts. Such as the effects of the coronavirus lockdowns on businesses and consecutively people, society, and economy. For example, lockdowns led to business closures, ~60% of which were permanent. With that in mind, small businesses employ 38% of Americans and generate 50% of our GDP. Naturally, these business closures led to mass layoffs, growing unemployment rates, and a variety of negative effects not only for the individual, but for the economy and society as well. For example, prolonged unemployment leads to higher crime rates, erosion of skills, denial of educational opportunities, and so on... Studies have also shown that prolonged unemployment harms the mental health of workers and can worsen physical health. In addition to the economic downturn, We went on to show some of the additional effects of the coronavirus, such as collective grief, social isolation, fear of the virus itself, and so on… Adults reporting symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress and alcohol and substance abuse, have increased dramatically during the pandemic. After this, we went on to show a video of some personal recounts of coronavirus survivors.
The fourth and fifth sections were quite short, they mainly talked about the handling of the pandemic, and the available national and local resources. All in all, I think the presentation and the teamwork involved in making the presentation was great.
