Our group oversaw chapter 10
which was Group Leadership and Problem solving and I was the leader of my group
for this project. Being the leader of this group proved to be an opportunity to
help my fellow students and myself at getting this presentation done on time
and to the best of our abilities. It also helped me get to know all my group
members. It was curious to have a chapter that touched upon all the qualities,
tips, and task roles required to help have a successful and cohesive group, it
helped in major way as we encountered some issues and miscommunications. I was
grateful for this chapter as I felt it helped me learn how to be in a
successful group now and for future life situations. I enjoyed working with my
group and learned to see different views and ways of doing things. I feel like
we all came together in the end as one. I also enjoyed implementing videos that
were fun and helped showed different examples of the roles and key points to a
successful group.
Now enough about my group, I want to talk
about how great Group 1 was, I loved their presentation and chapter on
intercultural communication. It was visually very appealing and for the short
time they had they came together and did a great job. I learned how the little
things we do, or eat, or even say without thinking twice are cultural
practices. I also learned how values differ depending on the culture and ideals
vary depending on societies. This chapter also touched base on the differences
between race and ethnicity, race being physical, and ethnicity being based on
beliefs or cultural backgrounds. We also learned about genders and sex, what
the differences are and how they are currently playing a part in our society in
how we are starting to these erase gender roles. I enjoyed learning about the
socioeconomic classes and statuses and how these different classes develop
co-cultures depending on their class. For example, parents in middle class tend
to encourage intellectual curiosity, this was something I had not heard of
before. Overall, with the exception of some technical errors, I enjoyed the
presentation and learned a few new things along the way.
Group 2, I felt also did a good job as they covered communicating in groups. In this presentation I learned about the many different types of groups that exist, such as family groups, social groups, support groups, interest groups, service groups, work groups, and virtual groups. It's quite a few of groups but they all have their place in our society and are in our everyday lives. I also learned about the characteristics of healthy groups, and unhealthy groups. This I felt was very important because we need to recognize the difference lest we fall into an unhealthy group. Groups should always be supportive and ethical. It is also important for a healthy group to be cohesive and we can achieve this by doing activities that build understanding, and trust. Healthy groups should implement rules and norms for all to follow this can help the group have the appropriate guidelines to succeed as a whole. This will also help the group hold members accountable and can show the importance of the group. Healthy groups work together to strive together, they should offer diverse perspectives and be open to discussion. We also learned about the stages of groups which are forming, storming, norming, performing, adjourning and transforming. All of these stages hold important and necessary growth for the creation of a cohesive and ultimate completion of a healthy group. The last part of the presentation touched upon conflict in groups, what kind of conflicts can be encountered in both virtual and non-virtual settings and how culture can play a role in these conflicts. But we learned how we can effectively overcome these issues with advice offered in the presentation. Overall, I believe they did well in getting the point across with the chapter. I thoroughly enjoyed this project and have to say our class leaders were wonderful, they were helpful to us all and provided guidance and cheer!
